SPIRIT OF DEMOCRACY
At the end of FREISPIEL 2024, we invite you to Frankfurt's Paulskirche, the site of the first National Assembly in 1848. Since its reconstruction in 1948, a large number of events and debates have taken place here that negotiate our democratic self-image. The Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, one of the first orchestras organized on a grassroots democratic basis, is now expanding this discourse with a musical contribution: the centrepiece of the concert is the world premiere of a commissioned composition by Mexican composer Diana Syrse, which deals with statements about the German National Assembly. The program is followed by Robert Schumann's Four Marches for piano, which he wanted to be understood as a retrospective acknowledgement of the failed 1848 revolution. Louis Spohr traveled to Frankfurt especially to discuss with the parliamentarians in the Paulskirche. The String Sextet in C major testifies to his hope for the realization of free German unity. Arsenal of Democracy by the American contemporary composer Julia Wolfe takes us back to the democratic nature of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie: the work arose from the idea of practising democratic principles in large ensembles.

Children up to the age of 12, schoolchildren and students, FSJ volunteers, severely disabled persons (from GdB 80) and wheelchair users and their registered companion receive a reduced ticket price on presentation of the relevant authorization card.
