The female characters in Lessing's plays and the women in Lessing's circle of friends are similar in some ways. Just as Emilia Galotti and Minna von Barnhelm defy existing conventions and break out of the roles assigned to them, Elise Reimarus, Meta Klopstock and Eva König also act emancipated, progressive and proactive, contrary to the prevailing image of women at the time. We take a mental stroll with them through Hamburg's city center.
