Experience history where Stuttgart began
Bad Cannstatt is Stuttgart's oldest and most populous district. Traces of settlement date back to the Stone Age and this is exactly where the Bad Cannstatt City Museum comes in. In the medieval Klösterle Scheuer, historical events and central themes of local history are presented in a vivid and atmospheric way.
People lived on the Neckar around two hundred and fifty thousand years ago. A travertine stone with fossilized remains of an old camp and battle site makes this time amazingly tangible. Around the year ninety AD, the Romans built an equestrian fort on the Steig to secure the Limes. A detailed diorama shows scenes from everyday provincial Roman life in Cannstatt and brings the Roman era back to life.
A model of the town impressively demonstrates what Cannstatt looked like in the Middle Ages and how this image persisted well into the nineteenth century. On the upper floor, the permanent exhibition Panorama Cannstatt takes visitors through various chapters of the district's history. Cannstatt appears as a city on the Neckar, a royal city, a literary city and a hometown. Other topics range from traditional bathing life and the early steps towards industrialization to well-known personalities associated with Cannstatt.
