Kai Schumacher - quick-change artist at the piano

Kai Schumacher - composer and pianist, as he describes himself - already thrilled the audience of the Konzertgesellschaft Schwerte years ago: a legendary concert at the Rohrmeisterei in 2017 as part of the Sternstunden festival, which began with sheet music and ended in a wonderful improvisation. He was able to respond very quickly and effectively to the skepticism surrounding the "music of today". His further artistic development has also brought him international renown in the meantime, so that we can look forward to hearing the Duisburg pianist again in Schwerte after almost 10 years.

If there is one thing that has nothing to do with him and his music, it is the term "crossover", a word that - as he says - suggests "something meets something". With Kai Schumacher, nothing meets nothing - because everything is always already there! The more different, the more familiar! He studied at the Folkwang University of the Arts and passed his concert exam. He is familiar with classical music, but also with punk and pop, minimal art, Dadaism and avant-garde. He plays solo piano - without electronic additions, no overdubs, no loops, no drum machine.

Everything lies open on the table. The keyboard he plays is the same as ever. The mysterious thing about this music is that it never pretends to hold a secret, its sobriety is striking, it jumps out at you and puzzles you.

He can do many things - and many things very well: he has announced a special program for the Schwerter Konzert: he will begin with Mozart fantasies and take us musically by the hand to his own transcriptions, both about Mozart and the grand master of serial music Philipp Glass.

He has compiled and published numerous albums and concert programs in recent years. As a soloist and chamber music partner, often with singer-songwriter Gisbert zu Knyphausen, Kai Schumacher has toured Europe, Asia, South and North America. He has been teaching piano at the Folkwang University of the Arts since 2015.
