Stories, Places, Fragments: Workshop im Dialog mit Beverly Buchanans "Frustula Series"

In the organizer's words:

In the course of the workshop, participants will engage with two groups of works by Beverly Buchanan - the Frustula Series and the environmental sculptures. During a dialogical tour of the exhibition, we will reflect on Buchanan's interest in buildings and the ruinous. In doing so, we will focus on the significance of temporality and materiality and refer to the historical and political contexts of her works.

The participants will then implement their own artistic experiments. First, we discuss our own attributions of meaning to materials - these can be personal associations or social or political meanings. The participants then cast geometric shapes from plaster and concrete. Inspired by Beverly Buchanan's way of working, they try out the addition of different materials and their effects: Sand, stones, apple cores, color pigments or leaves create different colorations and surface structures. The artist's own works also convey meaning through form, color and surface, as well as the connotations of the material and the arrangement of the forms in relation to each other.

Participants are invited to bring their own materials, which they can pour into their own or collective forms during the workshop.

About the event series:
Accompanying the preparation and presentation of the exhibition Beverly Buchanan Weathering. With Ima-Abasi Okon, a seminar took place in the summer semester 2025, jointly organized by Menzel-Dach (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) and Kunst im Kontext (Universität der Künste Berlin) under the direction of Jakob Schillinger and Karina Griffith. It focused on exploring Buchanan's work in relation to the history and present of Black Diaspora art in Germany. Designed as a hands-on course, it provided a platform for students to develop ideas for a public program to accompany the exhibition at Haus am Waldsee.
