Play by the Shieveh Theatre Company
The word“Shieveh,” which originates from Persian and is part of our company’s name, emphasizes the method by which theater is created. We embrace this idea by viewing theater as a platform for our colleagues who have limited opportunities to work due to politically tense situations. In the spirit of connecting with international artists and their perspectives, we are inviting the multi-award-winning theater artist Afsaneh Mahian and her company from Tehran to create a new play for the main stage.
With the production*The Child*, which tells the story of three women fleeing war and an infant at a European external border, the Shieveh Theatre Company has succeeded in presenting a profound exploration of the universal human right to asylum. Their latest play,*The Shadows*—a modern adaptation of the classical characters Antigone, Medea, and Oedipus—will have its world premiere in the summer of 2026 at theTheater der Weltfestival in Chemnitz.
Founded over 25 years ago in Tehran by writer and director Afsaneh Mahian, the Shieveh Theatre Company is a dynamic ensemble of dedicated Iranian artists. At the heart of their artistic exploration are pressing social issues, which the company weaves into evocative theatrical evenings in a purist style. Previous productions have been presented at the Athens Epidaurus Festival, the Bozar Kunsthaus in Brussels, Berlin’s HAU (Hebbel am Ufer), and the Vienna Festival.
The thematic focus the company will choose for its new production at the Staatstheater Kassel will become clear over time.
