With the artists Myriam Boulos + Olivia Arthur, Boaz Levin . Curator, C/O Berlin
Language English
With Talking Books, C/O Berlin regularly invites visitors to rediscover the world of photobooks. In an extended edition of the format, artists from the exhibition Close Enough will present their book projects in person and provide insights into their artistic practice.
Most of the works in the exhibition - all long-term, extensive projects - were also published as photo books. Some of them were published after the first exhibition in New York and were directly inspired by it. This raises key questions: How does a photo book differ from an exhibition? What role does the book play in her practice? And what future does the medium have as an independent form?
This time, Myriam Boulos and Olivia Arthur present their book projects. This will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.
Myriam Boulos' work documents life in Beirut over a period of ten years, reflecting personal and social realities in a Lebanon marked by war, trauma and protest. Her photographs are an act of resistance and self-empowerment, telling local stories from the perspective of those affected, creating space for visibility and understanding.
Olivia Arthur shows a photographic installation that deals with the body and its meaning, inspired by her own pregnancy. In it, she explores how people feel comfortable in their skin, their physical relationships and intimacies - also in the context of the pandemic, sexuality and technology.
Olivia Arthur (*1980, UK) is known for her in-depth photography that explores personal and cultural identities. She has documented the everyday lives of women in Saudi Arabia, India and various European countries. Her work has been published in The New Yorker, Vogue and Time Magazine. In 2010, together with Philipp Ebeling, she founded Fishbar, a publishing house and exhibition space for photography in London.
Myriam Boulos (*1992, Lebanon) started using her camera at the age of sixteen to ask questions about Beirut, its people and her own role in it. She obtained a master's degree in photography at L'Académie Libanaise des Beaux Arts in 2015. Her work has been shown in exhibitions such as Infinite Identities (2020-2021) at Huis Marseille and C'est Beyrouth (2019) at Institut des Cultures d'Islam, Paris. She uses photography to question and resist society and joined Magnum in 2021.
