C/O Berlin dedicates a special edition of TALKING BOOKS to the new book Natural Sources by Jochen Lempert. The artist's book, published in 2024 by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, is the result of a series of exhibitions, including the 2023 exhibition Jochen Lempert . Lingering Sensations, which will be shown at C/O Berlin in 2023.
Jochen Lempert has been creating a unique photographic oeuvre for over 35 years. With astonished curiosity, he looks at the cultural fascination for flora and fauna. He is interested in the phenomena of perception and their translation into images, life forms and their analogies to his own creative process. For all their photographic minimalism, his images are full of poetic power and profound knowledge about the natural sources of our existence.
Jochen Lempert joins Kathrin Schönegg, author and curator of the Berlin exhibition, and designers Ina Kwon and Helmut Völter for a discussion of the publication. Together they will discuss the creation of the book, conceptual and design decisions and the significance of the photo book in Lempert's artistic practice.
Books can be purchased on site at the C/O Berlin Bookshop.
Jochen Lempert studied biology. Between 1979 and 1989 he was a member of the experimental film group Schmelzdahin, which worked on the combination of chemical processes and celluloid film. Since the 1990s, he has been exploring the dialog between nature and man in the medium of photography. His work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in collections such as the Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Kathrin Schönegg is a photo historian and head of the photo collection at the Münchner Stadtmuseum. She was co-program director at C/O Berlin until 2023.
