Performance as part of the Tanztriennale Hamburg, June 14 - 21, 2026
"Living Cultural Body" is not concerned with how culture is preserved, but with how culture continuously produces itself. The voice is not an accompaniment, but the origin of movement that leads the body into a state of being. Through song, rhythm and breath, the cultural memory is activated and the origins of the Paiwan people, the Taiwanese indigenous ethnic group, are traced from the north to the south of the country. Culture is not displayed, but maintained through embodied action. When the song reaches the south, bulabulay mun? ("How are you?") - a greeting that reaches across time, carries memory and trauma and at the same time opens up space for renewed connection.
The Tjimur Dance Theatre is the first professional dance company in Taiwan to focus on contemporary Paiwan dance. Founded in 2006 by Ljuzem Madiljin, director and artistic director of the company, and Baru Madiljin, dance director and choreographer, the company is dedicated to interpreting contemporary experiences through ancient ballads. It integrates song and dance and uses the song as a guide for the creation of the dance. The Tjimur Dance Theatre showcases the extraordinary physical expressions of Paiwan culture, making it a unique style among contemporary dance companies in Taiwan.
