Charpentier: Leçons de ténèbresLe Concert de la Loge | Julien ChauvinIn 17th century Paris, even the unbelievers flocked to the churches during the opera-less Lenten season. For here, thanks to great voices, the moving passion music "Leçons de Ténèbres" resounded, which a Marc-Antoine Charpentier had also composed for Holy Week. Some of his "Leçons" are now celebrated by the French original sound ensemble Le Concert de la Loge.
For the "Leçons de Ténèbres", the Lamentations of Jeremiah were set to music, expressing despair over the suffering of Christ. And their performances on the nights of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday always proved to be atmospheric productions as well - when the candles were extinguished one by one to symbolize the farewell to the Son of God. Ensemble founder Julien Chauvin also follows this tradition with his celebrated ensemble Le Concert de la Loge.
