Pressure: Grime, Dub, Dancehall and Dirt.
It's Pressure night again and that means we're setting up The Bug's massive sound system to make the alloy of grime, dub, hip-hop, dubstep, electronica and the countless facets of bass music not only audible, but also physically tangible.
For countless years, the musical jack-of-all-trades Kevin Martin has been producing music under at least nine different pseudonyms and project names, always pushing the boundaries of musical expression. Under his best-known alias, The Bug, he has now released a new, purely instrumental album, "Machine". "Machine" combines overwhelming sub-bass, a relentless industrial sound and a gloomy tempo to create a post-apocalyptic assault on the senses. Released on Relapse, the 12-song project brings together tracks from five EPs released in recent years, a heady mix of drone metal, dancehall, dubstep, grime, industrial, hip-hop and bass intensity. This brings together the most important ingredients for a Pressure night.
The Bug's set will be completed by support from Manga Saint Hilare and Logan. Manga Saint Hilare was a member of the grime collective Roll Deep and has developed into one of the best lyricists in the scene over the years. Manga uses fast flows and incredible technique to tell stories of life on the fringes of pop culture, lyrically, thoughtfully and with clear messages. Logan has been on the grime, dubstep and UK funk scene since 2017. As a self-proclaimed "one-man army", he tirelessly fires off his signature patois-tinged lyrics.
Ghost Dubs is the new project from Jah Schulz, who has just released the album "Damaged" under this alias on Pressure, which contains 12 dark soundscapes that cast a pulsating spell over you. A distillation of 50 years of bass music, minimalist and pure, the essence of dub, so to speak.
Gorgon Sound consists of the well-known producers Kahn & Neek. The pair are firmly rooted in the soundsystem culture of their home city of Bristol. Having worked on countless different projects spanning steppa, dub, dubstep and tape-looped ambient amongst others, they never feel tied to a single vision of what soundsystem music can be.
Holy Tongue is the project of percussionist Valentina Magaletti and producer Al Wootton. Their sound spectrum ranges from dub, jazz and post-punk to mystical percussion tracks and experimental electronica. Psychedelic, free, energetic and spiritual dub that fits in well with a pressure night.
