Klezmer concert at the KESSELHAUS

The Klezmatics are one of the most successful and creative bands in modern Jewish music. Since their founding in 1986 in New York's East Village, they have led the worldwide klezmer revival, renewing the centuries-old Yiddish musical tradition with a progressive and contemporary approach. For four decades, The Klezmatics have been delighting audiences worldwide with their unique sound, combining klezmer with jazz, gospel, punk, classical, Latin and Balkan music. Their music is rooted in the Eastern European Jewish tradition, but represents a modern world view and deals with topics such as human rights, anti-fundamentalism and life in the diaspora.

To celebrate their 40th anniversary, the six musicians are going on a worldwide tour from 2025 to 2027, which will take them to the USA and Canada as well as Europe in particular, as this is where the band's history began in the 1980s. The Klezmatics are also producing their most ambitious studio project "The New York Sessions", an album that pays homage to the cultural melting pot that is New York. The album contains newly interpreted hymns, powerful new original compositions and multilingual compositions that combine Yiddish with Uyghur, Kurdish, Arabic, Armenian, Ukrainian and other languages. In addition to this album, a re-release of some of their most relevant CDs is also planned. The Klezmatics have realized many musical collaborations in the course of their exciting band history, and will conjure up a surprise or two on stage on their anniversary world tour. Each show will be an ecstatic tribute to the Klezmatics' extensive oeuvre with both familiar and new songs and stands for a bright future for klezmer music!

The Klezmatics are the only klezmer band ever to have won a Grammy Award. They won it in 2007 in the category "Best Contemporary World Music Album" for their outstanding project "Wonder Wheel: Lyrics by Woody Guthrie", in which they explored the socially critical lyrics of Woody Guthrie. The result was an album and a concert program that is still performed and celebrated worldwide today. The band has released a total of 13 successful albums, reached the top of the Billboard World Music Charts and received numerous international awards, including the German Critics' Choice Award and the New York Jewish Music Award. The Klezmatics have performed in over 20 countries and at the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, from Carnegie Hall to European cathedrals and major rock festivals. The Klezmatics' music is regularly featured in films, TV productions, plays and performances. For example, their songs have been featured on David Letterman's late night show and HBO's 'Sex and the City'. The Klezmatics have collaborated with a wide range of artists, including violinist Itzhak Perlman, Israeli star Chava Alberstein, gospel singer Joshua Nelson, Arlo Guthrie, poet Allen Ginsberg, Theodore Bikel and many more.
