The Köln Concert

It is the soundtrack for the emotional moments in many people's lives, a favorite of millions and one of the most beautiful and successful jazz recordings of all time: The 'Köln Concert' by American jazz pianist Keith Jarrett.

Jarrett is "his composer", reveals the American dancer and choreographer Trajal Harrell. He enters the stage alone at first. Seven empty piano benches are set up and the bright, clear voice of Canadian musician Joni Mitchell fills the room, merging seamlessly with Jarrett's piano improvisation.

The seven dancers effortlessly and light as a feather translate the virtuoso depth of soul of the jazz improvisation into a touching stage event. Japanese Butoh and Western modern dance come together. Harrell mixes poses familiar from ancient vase paintings with voguing, the extravagant catwalk style that emerged in the queer New York subculture scene of the 1970s.

In this multi-colored play of references and stories, Trajal Harrell elegantly brings together his stylistic origins and draws a path of mutual attentiveness. The shared experience of the dancers, who show themselves in all their vulnerability, stands for Harrell as a symbol of remembering the many stories of people who are barely heard or seen.
