TJ Ballantyne's pub "The Old Oak" is the last place in the former pit village in the north-east of England where people can meet. When Syrian refugees are housed in the empty buildings, the young Syrian woman Yara befriends the owner of the pub and they create a shared space for refugees and locals, where free food is cooked for everyone. But not everyone in the village likes it ...

In what is probably his last film, director Ken Loach once again tells of the power of solidarity and the hope that solidarity and charity can overcome xenophobia and racism.
