It could have been so simple: Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson in the role of a lifetime), a former teacher and now an alcoholic author, takes a job as caretaker at the remote Overlook Hotel in the Colorado backcountry, which is closed for the winter as it is every year. Seemingly easy money, a free winter vacation with his wife and child, and more than enough time to devote to writing his new novel.
Too bad the hotel seems to have a sinister life of its own and entirely different plans for the little family. As Jack descends further and further into madness, his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and his telepathic son Danny (Danny Lloyd) soon find themselves fighting for their very survival.
