THIS IS THE MODERN WORLD. Durchbrüche in der Kunst 1900–1960

In the organizer's words:

With THIS IS THE MODERN WORLD. Breakthroughs in Art 1900-1960, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is presenting a new interpretation of its Modern Art Collection, which, with more than 3,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints and drawings, is one of the most important collections of modern art in Germany. With around 125 selected works - including well-known highlights and special new additions - the presentation illustrates the wealth of new ideas and approaches as well as the break with existing traditions in the art of these six decades, which was characterized by extraordinary upheavals in culture and society.
On display is the diversity of approaches within the various modernist movements. These include iconic works of Expressionism such as those by the artist groups "Brücke" and "Der Blaue Reiter" as well as painters from the École de Paris such as Sonia Delaunay-Terk, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. On display are works by pioneers of early modernism such as Edvard Munch, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Lovis Corinth, Max Beckmann and Anita Rée. Also represented are examples of the Bauhaus school, Surrealism, works of the psychologically charged realism of New Objectivity and the Informel of the post-war period.
