A village in northern Saxony plays GDR again, for a month and with all the risks and side effects. A satirical farce against uncritical Ostalgie that could hardly be more topical.

Germany in 2016: Dortmund couple Beate and Peter Sendler, both in their mid-fifties (she: frustrated educator, he: unsuccessful documentary filmmaker), move to the Saxon village of Maulberg and experience not only a peaceful idyll of togetherness, but also the longing of many residents for the "good old" GDR. It is difficult for the people of Maulberg to accept that the newcomer, of all people, has the idea, but the idea is too tempting: to celebrate the village's 400th anniversary, the town decides on an experiment: four weeks back in the GDR - with all the trimmings: old TV programs, East German products in the supermarket, which is of course called "Kaufhalle" again, with pioneer scarves and the Republic's birthday.

But the experiment gets out of hand, because neither ox nor donkey can stop the Maulbergers in their tracks ...
