International Summer Festival 2024

A lyrical pop mantra with vintage synthesizers and crooked pianos: Canadian pop trio Timber Timbre traces the spirits of the present to kick off the festival.

In almost every review of the Canadian trio Timber Timbre's new album, Leonard Cohen is mentioned as a reference. Because hardly anyone translates melancholy into artistic melodies as light-footedly as Timber Timbre head Taylor Kirk, who himself names Alice Coltrane and Brian Wilson as influences in addition to the Canadian music poet Cohen. On his seventh album "Loveage", slightly off-key piano ballads, spiritual jazz moments and fairground music combine to create a mood that feels like a ride on a discarded carousel through the present. In his lyrics, which would make a veritable volume of poetry and in which individual sentences are repeated again and again in a very cohenesque and mantra-like manner, Taylor Kirk deals with borderline personality disorders ("Confessions of Dr. Woo") or the addiction to sweets ("Sugar Land" - as a perverted cover of the Ronettes classic "Be My Baby"). The fact that these songs feel so weighty and weightless at the same time is the art of Timber Timbre, with which they will warm up the (presumably very sold-out) club for the opening of the 2024 summer festival.
