JAZZ HOCH DREI - New jazz series every last Monday of the month

The new concert series Jazz Hochdrei will revive the unique atmosphere offered by the station house on the Elbe. Stage, audience, bar - there is no spatial separation at the Hafenbahnhof. The audience experiences the musicians and the musicians experience the audience more closely than at any other venue in the city. This is not a concert hall, but a living room. The ideal place for sonic experiments and new constellations from the Hamburg jazz scene.

After the opening concert on December 15, 2025, the second round is now underway with Tobias Delius and John Hughes.

Tobias Delius and John Hughes have been playing together since 2010. The two have played in a trio with Han Bennink, as well as in larger ensembles (WHL play MONK!, Echoes of South Africa, Concentric Circles and The Rythmic Mystery Quartet). As a duo, Delius and Hughes develop astonishing nebula-like clouds of sound in which songs from their joint repertoire suddenly appear.

In 2004, Tobias Delius was awarded the Dutch Boy Edgar Prize. In 2025, he received the Berlin Jazz Prize; the jury praised his stylistic openness, his earthy, present tone and his willingness to leave space for his fellow players. Far more than a soloist, deeper and more profound than any frontman - Tobias Delius is the primal scream of the saxophone. One moment he can channel the sound of Lester Young or Ben Webster, the next his saxophone playing resembles birdsong in the rainforest.

US-born bassist and composer John Hughes has been a fixture on the Hamburg jazz and free improvisation scene since 1998. He has organized numerous festivals and concert series, including the award-winning Multiphonics Hamburg, and currently curates the Audible Instances series at Westwerk. As a versatile double bassist, Hughes works with the quartet Gravelshard, HOSHO and Winntizki/Hughes/Lücker Play MONK, as well as in various duos and trios with renowned musicians.
