A stormy day on the coast. Allison braves the wind and looks out to sea. She has made it and has finally left. She had to leave. It was no longer bearable with her father. But instead of finding her father's ex-girlfriend here as she had hoped, she meets old Marla. However, she recognizes a certain Toffee, a friend from the past, in Allison. Allison takes refuge with Marla and begins to make friends with the sometimes confused woman. Gradually, they share their life stories and as the sea drives the waves onto the shore, Allison realizes the importance of memories and how a new home is created.

With Toffee, Sarah Crossan has written a touching novel in verse about forgetting and remembering, about the search for a sheltered home and the power of an unusual friendship.
