Tom Odell has announced his new record "Black Friday" for next January. In doing so, the Brit is taking a new approach: while he was previously known for his piano-laden sounds, which earned him the Brit Award, among others, this time he has significantly reduced the production. "I recorded the songs last winter and spring," he says of the album, "and tried to leave them as 'unproduced' as possible; With this, I want to give the most honest picture of how I felt during that time." This can be clearly heard on the tracks released so far. In particular, the current single "Somebody Else" is a prime example of how sketchy and stripped down Odell has approached his music. Introduced by a simple piano line to which he sings along softly in the background, an acoustic guitar accompanies the characteristic voice singing of a love gone by. Only single dabs in the arrangement complement the production; the buzzing of the strings as the fingers run along them is the only percussive element, and when the piano line reappears, even a small verse player remains. And just when you think it's all over now, it's surprisingly followed by drums and a restrained bass line. The whole piece and the whole album seem very raw, but also very fragile. You can feel, this song as well as the already released title track "Black Friday" - which already counted two million streams on the day of release - were sung and recorded exactly as they were written. Pure and authentic. On the other songs on the record, too, the string arrangements and the restrained rhythm section emphasize the intimacy of the moment. "Black Friday" perfectly shows the Englishman for what he is: a terrific songwriter. Odell also cites the reason he chose this approach: "These songs mean a lot to me and I can't wait for everyone to hear them." We're also looking forward to hearing the new album in January and, of course, especially to hearing the new songs live in the spring when Tom Odell joins us on tour for five shows.
