Trembling / Drifting & The Sound of Difference and Connection

The evening is a collaboration between the soloist ensemble Kaleidoskop, the Korean ensemble WhatWhy Art, Maya Dunietz, and Orthodox Records, and is conceived as a joint exploration of contemporary music, artistic collaboration, and the practice of attentive listening. Through two works, a field of sound and resonance emerges in which different artistic approaches converge, overlap, and merge—thereby constantly opening up new connections and perspectives.

The concert creates a space for the unique spatial and acoustic qualities of the Halle am Berghain and connects them with different temporal and semantic levels: past and future, East and West, individual and collective. Both works performed invite active, attentive listening and make the audience part of a shared present moment. At the heart of this is the question of how connection can arise from difference—and how sound forges relationships and creates a sense of presence. The Halle am Berghain itself becomes a resonant counterpart that shapes and deepens the experience.

 

The concert opens with the world premiere of*Trembling / Drifting*, a collaboration between the Seoul-based collective WhatWhy Art and the Berlin-based soloist ensemble Kaleidoskop. Building on their earlier project *Trembling*, the work explores how vibration and resonance can become a shared language—bridging Korean tradition and contemporary Western music. Drawing on various forms of vibrato and sonic practices, a shared resonant space emerges in which sounds meet, shift, and transform one another.

The second part of the evening is dedicated to*The Sound of Difference and Connection*, a new work by composer Maya Dunietz, developed in collaboration with the soloist ensemble Kaleidoskop and released in June 2026 on Orthodox Records. The piece navigates the tension between closeness and difference, focusing on shared listening. From subtle, slowly shifting sonic gestures emerges a continuous process of drawing closer and drifting apart again. In this way, a soundscape unfolds that is constantly changing and remains in motion. The ensemble appears as a living organism—without a fixed hierarchy, sustained by mutual attention and response.
