In the organizer's words:

William Turner is still considered a revolutionary innovator and pioneer of the modern age. Born in the age of saga ships, died in the age of steamships, he is the chronicler of this industrial and social revolution. At a very early stage, a hitherto unseen freedom of color characterized his painting; this amazed his contemporaries and continues to surprise posterity with his astonishing modernity.
From fall 2023 to spring 2024, the Lenbachhaus, in cooperation with Tate, London, will present a major exhibition on William Turner. With around 40 paintings as well as 40 watercolors and sketches from all creative phases, we would like to explore the question of how Turner trained, invented and staged himself. In doing so, we are fulfilling our long-held desire to be able to show the artist's work in its entire breadth.

The exhibition is organized by the Lenbachhaus in cooperation with Tate, London.
