“The Mountain Up Close”: U-Theatre from Taiwan invites you to a unique, intimate encounter at the Stromwerk Dresden.
Just two months after the highly acclaimed “Taiwan Moves” festival at HELLERAU, Dresden continues its cultural collaboration with Taiwan: On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, the internationally renowned Taiwanese ensemble U-Theatre (優人神鼓) will present at the Stromwerk – Kulturarena Kraftwerk Mitte an exceptionally intimate version of its production “The Mountain Up Close,” conceived specifically for Dresden.
U-Theatre was founded in 1988 by Liu Ruo-Yu on Laochuan Mountain near Taipei and shaped in 1993 by drum master Huang Chih-Chun, who fused meditation, Tai Chi Chuan, and traditional martial arts with percussion, music, and dance. To this day, the company lives and rehearses in monastic seclusion in the mountains of Taipei and is considered one of Asia’s most significant theater and percussion groups, having performed at venues including the Festival d’Avignon and the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris.
About “The Mountain Up Close”: In this special version, developed specifically for Dresden, the audience gets unusually close to the drummers and dancers. The first six rows of seats give way to an open space where percussion, dance, and meditative movement unfold right before the audience’s eyes—a format that combines the focus of a classical performance with the immediate, almost tangible character of an open rehearsal. At the heart of the performance remains the poetic homage to Mount Laoquan, U-Theatre’s long-standing spiritual home and training ground, featuring the traditional instruments xiao, erhu, sheng, yangqin, cello, and flute in interplay with drums and gongs.
A chapter in the growing connection between Saxony and Taiwan: The performance in Dresden is part of a series of cultural exchanges between Saxony and Taiwan, ranging from the founding of the Saxon-Taiwanese Society (STAGE e.V.) in 2024 to the multi-day “Taiwan Moves” festival in June 2026 at HELLERAU, which was opened by Saxony’s Minister of Culture, Barbara Klepsch.
“We didn’t want to show the Dresden audience a scaled-down version of a large-scale production, but rather to facilitate a unique, particularly intimate encounter with U-Theatre—hence the new name,” says Rob van den Bos, artistic producer at EPPAX and European representative of U-Theatre. “To make this special format accessible to as wide an audience as possible, we deliberately set the ticket price low.”
