Ukrainian Callings

In her solo program Ukrainian Call ings, one of Ukraine's most prominent voices, Mariana Sadovska, invites you on a musical journey to remote Ukrainian regions. There, the singer, who has become known as the "Ukrainian Björk", has collected pagan rituals, traditional wedding songs and bold Carpathian songs: Centuries-old material that could only be preserved through local oral tradition. Sadovska, who has lived between her homeland and Germany for many years, collects these important cultural testimonies and uses them in plays, multimedia projects and concerts.
For her concert on KunstFestSpieleTag, Sadovska has invited the young Ukrainian ensemble Shlyakh-dorizhenka to perform with her. This is also a tradition and a sign that Ukrainian music is alive and vibrant.
The band was founded in the village of Makariv near Kyiv. Due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, all the musicians were forced to emigrate to other regions and countries. Some of them now live in Germany, where they continue to perform and develop traditional singing, music and dance.
