As part of the January edition of Spätschicht, which was developed in collaboration with the Schwules Museum, the Gropius Bau is showing the film Freak Orlando from 1981. Ulrike Ottinger, the artist and maker of the film, will be present during the screening. Freak Orlando mixes aspects of the satirical, the uncanny and the surreal and unfolds in five episodes that tell of the lives and deaths of outsiders and the marginalized, of mistakes, incompetence, hunger for power, fear, madness, cruelty and everyday life. Ottinger spans an arc from mythological prehistory to the 20th century. Guided by Orlando as a wanderer through the centuries, the episodic journey through time and the world begins with a sale of myths in a department store and ends at a "festival of ugliness".
