"Digging - Excavating - Viewing"

Five experiences - five positions - five approaches

Five female artists shed light on their own biographies and look back at previous generations. What did the world of experience look like there? To what extent was it possible to create art, especially for women? What opportunities were available and what paths were blocked? What continues?

Paula Coulin, Yule von Hertell, Sandra Hilleckes, Judica Albrecht and Alexandra Uhle have joined forces to explore parallels and points of reference in a joint exhibition. In a figurative sense, the artists bring together their finds and integrate ancestral objects into the process of "digging, excavating and sifting". Paintings, text material, film installations and objects result in a seemingly loose network of joint questioning of the past on a very personal level.

What does the glow of the volcano reveal? What is hidden under the portrait of the mother, loosely laid out of stones, what is hidden under the portrait of the father with the badge on his collar? Why is there an armored box? What artifacts did people who preceded us create, and why? What is revealed in the images that were made by us and that lie dormant within us?
This exhibition is now entering its fourth round here at Galerie 149 in Bremerhaven. In 2024, this exhibition was shown for the first time at the Dahlenburger Kunstverein. In 2025, it was placed in Lübeck in the Artler producers' gallery and in the Heinrich-Heinehaus in Lüneburg. For us, this is a sign that topics such as reflection, trauma and understanding the connections between the experiences of different generations are of the utmost importance in our society.
