Vicente Martín y Soler's opera "Una Cosa Rara" was anything but a "rare thing" after its premiere in 1786, according to the German translation of the title. The Spanish composer's piece even ousted Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" from the repertoire of Vienna's Burgtheater. Today, this successful work of Viennese classical music, in which the self-confident friends Lilla and Ghita resist the attempts of princes and noblemen to conquer them out of love for their fiancées, is indeed a rarity on the opera stage and definitely an insider tip!
The prominent poet Lorenzo Da Ponte, author of many famous opera texts by Mozart and Antonio Salieri, wrote the libretto for Soler's entertaining comedy, which is full of confusion and misunderstandings. After Da Ponte experienced the opera in Vienna, he praised it with the words "such charming, so appealing, so new and so popular music". Director Andreas Baesler and visual artist Markus Lüpertz brought the gallant world of "Cosa Rara" back to life at Theater Regensburg. The Staatstheater Meiningen took over this colorful and imaginative opera production, which was celebrated by the press and audience, and is now making a guest appearance in Fürth.
