UNSTABLE MEDIA IN THE 21ST CENTURY examines some of the most radical voices in media art today through some 40 key works from the Centre Pompidou's pioneering New Media collection.
Since the 1980s, the uncertain future of emerging technologies has challenged any stable notion of "new media" as an art form, as one technology replaces the next. Yet these technologies have become embedded in our sensory memory, forming what might be called our "subskin". Through countless interfaces and persistent resonances, media culture is embodied and enacted daily as an interwoven substrate of human life, simultaneously challenging the possibility of a critical stance. Bringing together a variety of different art forms and situations, the exhibition explores how artists have appropriated and reinvented media over the past decades, simultaneously recognizing and transforming it. The show is divided into eight chapters and unfolds along a series of selected paths that open up new possible stories and histories.
