What is urban birding? Birdwatching in the middle of the city - that's urban birding. The idea: even in everyday urban life there is an amazing variety of birds that most people simply don't notice. birdingtours is a tour operator that offers guided tours for birdwatchers - from one-day city excursions to trips around the world.

The tour in Erfurt No remote moor, no distant wilderness - but the city, the banks of the River Gera, parkland and a loud concert of beak sounds. The tour leads through the Steigerwald forest, along the Gera, through residential areas, parks and avenues right into the heart of the old town.

What makes Erfurt special? Erfurt is home to one of the last populations of crested larks in Thuringia - a real rarity in the middle of the city. The Steigerwald bird sanctuary also offers an abundance of birdsong and, with a bit of luck, kingfishers and dippers can be spotted along the Gera. The colorful oriole is also a target species.

How does the day work? The meeting point is at 7 a.m. in the south of Erfurt. The day begins with the morning bird song chorus in the Steigerwald forest, continues through residential areas and along the Gera, after a breakfast break in the countryside through parks and avenues, and ends with a search for the last crested larks in Thuringia. The excursion lasts from 7 a.m. to around 3 p.m. with a walking distance of around 11 kilometers.

We recommend sturdy shoes and clothing suitable for the weather, binoculars and a spotting scope if available, as well as a day rucksack and an identification book - for example "Der neue Kosmos Vogelführer" by Svensson et al. or "Was fliegt denn da?" by Barthel/Dougalis. The trails are approx. 11 km long, but mostly easy to walk.

Practical information The day tour costs €49, with a surcharge of €15 per person for fewer than 6 participants. A professional, German-speaking tour guide is included. Previous knowledge is not necessary.
