Historian Moshe Zimmermann talks to film and media scholar Lea Wohl von Haselberg about the Middle East conflict and the utopia of peace.

In his latest book Never Peace? Israel at the Crossroads (2024), Moshe Zimmermann looks back to the past - to the emergence of the Zionist movement and the 75-year history of the State of Israel - to draw attention to possible ways out of the vicious circle of violence and counter-violence. In the foreword, he writes: "What has happened over the past thirty years, and even more so what has happened since October 7, 2023, has contributed to the hardening of the fronts on both sides and the further escalation of mutual hatred. My assessment is very critical, but despite my pessimism, I try to think constructively."

Moshe Zimmermann is Professor Emeritus of Modern History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, his research focuses include anti-Semitism and nationalism. Until 2012, he headed the Koebner Center for German History at the Hebrew University. He is the author of numerous books, including Wende in Israel (1996) and Die Angst vor dem Frieden (2010), in which he passionately advocates the two-state solution.

Lea Wohl von Haselberg researches and teaches at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF. Her work focuses on the representation of Jewish themes in German discourses, Jewish film history and (audiovisual) cultures of remembrance. She is also program director of the Jewish Film Festival Berlin | Brandenburg (JFBB).

The planned first part of the event, the discussion with Jeanine Meerapfel and Erdmut Wizisla about Walter Benjamin and Paul Klee, unfortunately has to be canceled.
