Berlin artist Eva Schönfeld combines technical mastery with deep socio-critical and emotional themes. Her works, created from personal experience and social commitment, invite reflection and conversation.Eva Schönfeld works in two impressive painting styles:
Watercolor and pastel chalk works: unconventional on brown wrapping paper, with socio-critical and psychological themes that portray feelings, inner struggles and social issues in detail.
Oil and acrylic paintings: Bold colors, surrealism and unusual compositions that take the viewer on an imaginative journey and exude vibrancy.
"Art has helped me to still be here. Instead of taking drugs, I paint."
Eva Schönfeld, a freelance artist in Berlin-Pankow, paints pictures that you never forget. They tell of life in all its facets, of fear, hope, anger, grief, womanhood, partnership, feminism, nature, illness, solidarity, war and dreams. All this with the utmost technical precision and an extraordinary mixture of different styles and materials that fascinates and immediately captivates the viewer.
"When I paint, I express everything that is inside me - my anger, fears, questions, my opinion. I need art as an outlet to get everything that's bothering me inside and out of my system. I need it to be able to live."
Eva Schönfeld was confronted with a serious mental illness at a young age. Art helps her to find her way back into life bit by bit and to heal. However, the artist not only deals with her own inner themes and experiences, but also with social and political issues in her works.
She has been painting and drawing since she was a child. Early on, she developed a great ambition to improve her technique, learning the craft with the help of self-taught books. "I painted on huge rolls of fax paper and spent countless hours of my childhood and youth painting and drawing," says Eva Schönfeld in conversation.
All of the artist's works have one thing in common: they thematize, but do not shout at the viewer. They express an opinion and invite conversation rather than offending. They deal with fears, illness and dreams, but in all of this they do not frighten, but instead convey hope in a surprisingly direct way.
It is probably the authenticity, vulnerability and honesty in Eva Schönfeld's art that achieves this balancing act. The viewer feels picked up and understood, in the same boat as the artist, who is perhaps - hopefully - heading for a calm and safe harbor after all
The title of the exhibition, "female gaze", refers to a feminist perspective that focuses on the representation of women in art, media and culture. It is about how women are seen and portrayed. The aim is a representation that goes beyond pure objectification and emphasizes the complexity, individuality and inner world of women.
