Vicki Baum (1888-1960), best known internationally for her novel Menschen im Hotel (1929), struggled with the label of 'bestselling author' throughout her life. Promoted early on by Thomas Mann, she was nevertheless long regarded as 'mere' entertainment literature. Only gradually are her texts being read anew - as a critique of capitalism and colonialism, among other things. A selection of her extensive work from over 30 novels, novellas and plays is now available for the first time in the original unabridged version as an annotated edition. The six volumes present central prose texts and represent the thematic, narrative and multilingual range of Baum's various stations between Vienna, Berlin and Hollywood. The edition draws on material scattered in many archives, including the Vicki Baum Archive of the Akademie der Künste.
Gabriele Radecke, head of the Academy of Arts' literary archive, talks to the two editors Julia Bertschik and Veronika Hofeneder. Meike Rötzer reads.
