Vicki Baum (1888-1960), best known internationally for her novel "Menschen im Hotel" (1929), struggled with the label of bestselling author throughout her life. Promoted early on by Thomas Mann, she was nevertheless long regarded as "mere" entertainment literature. It is only gradually that her texts are being read anew - as a critique of capitalism and colonialism, among other things. A selection of her extensive work from over 30 novels, novellas and plays is now available for the first time in an unabridged original version as an annotated edition. For the edition, which will be presented in a reading and discussion, material scattered in many archives was used, including the Vicki Baum Archive of the Akademie der Künste, which the event will provide an insight into.
