On February 24, the anniversary of the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine in 2022, we will be showing the film Viktor - a haunting portrait of the deaf war photographer Viktor, who defends his country with his camera.
Viktor lost his hearing at the age of five. He lives with his mother in Kharkiv, right on the Russian border, and when the Russians attack Ukraine, his greatest wish is to defend his country. Determined to prove himself, he wants to enlist at the front, but he is not allowed to become a soldier. Instead, he chooses his black and white camera as a weapon and becomes a volunteer photographer for the local army.
With his wild black beard and shining eyes, Viktor is like a character from an old legend in the midst of a chaotic reality. A quiet man who swears by the philosophy of the samurai and the noble military spirit instilled in him by his late father.
Director Olivier Sarbil is an eminent cameraman and war photographer and suffers from hearing loss himself. While Viktor may be one of the most captivatingly photographed films of the year, the sound is as much a part of the experience as the black and white images. With a sound design by the Oscar-winning team behind The Sound of Metal, it's a movie we experience through Viktor's subjective vision of a world suddenly plunged into violence and chaos.
