Recognizing bird calls in Berlin

Basic course on native avifauna

With around 250 regularly breeding species as well as numerous resting and wintering visitors, Germany is one of the bird-rich countries in Europe. Berlin occupies a special position in this respect: The interlocking of urban structures with parks, bodies of water, fallow land and wooded areas creates diverse habitats that enable a high level of ornithological diversity. A bird tour in Berlin therefore opens up a differentiated view of nature that goes far beyond everyday city birds.

The focus of this bird tour is not just on observing, but on listening. Many bird species can hardly be distinguished by external characteristics, especially in densely overgrown habitats. Songs and calls are therefore a key identification tool. The aim of the excursion is to systematically introduce participants to typical vocalizations and to enable reliable acoustic identification of common species.

The tour is accompanied by experienced ornithologists who impart their specialist knowledge in a practical manner. In addition to acoustic identification, behavior, territory structures and seasonal characteristics are also explained.

Another focus is on understanding Berlin as a natural environment. Based on vegetation, types of water bodies and landscape structure, it is explained which species can be expected in certain areas of the city. Topics such as breeding ecology, migration strategies, feeding ecology and population trends are placed in a regional context. Issues of species decline, land use and climate change are also discussed objectively.

Treptower Park serves as an excursion area and, with its old trees, open meadows and proximity to the River Spree, offers suitable conditions for a diverse bird world. The approximately three-hour tour is aimed at both beginners and people with previous knowledge who would like to deepen their knowledge of the species.
