Detlef Landeck, inspired by the American jazz and improvisation musician Butch Morris, developed the principle of conduction and conducted improvisation with the Volkswagen Sound Orchestra.
He coordinates and controls the musicians' playing using a repertoire of different hand signals that enable him to call up composed and improvised parts. Time sequences are monitored and the sounds are spontaneously collaged on top of each other. The sound character of the pieces is in the foreground. The sound.

Percussion grooves contributed by percussionist Olaf Pyras, which he elicits from vehicle components, are just as much a part of the Volkswagen Sound Orchestra as machine sounds from the Volkswagen plant in Baunatal, which were sampled and processed by sound artist Wolfram der Spyra. The musicians in the project are all Volkswagen employees from very different areas who interpret the modules composed by Landeck and give free rein to their creative improvisation skills as part of the "Conducted Improvisation Concept".
