VOM EINSAMEN STERBEN

In the organizer's words:

Venue:
Freie Akademie der Künste, Klosterwall 23, 20095 Hamburg

"The unobtrusive yet touching impression it made on us as spectators was so strong that no one dared to clap for minutes after the black at the end. You should definitely take the opportunity to see this theater installation."
(Birgit Schmalmack, hamburgtheater.de)

According to scientific studies, 150,000 people over the age of 60 suffer from loneliness - in Hamburg alone. Every month, at least one body is recovered here that has been lying undiscovered in an apartment for several weeks. In addition, there are hundreds of official burials every year where the authorities have been unable to locate friends or relatives of the deceased.

Vom einsamen Sterben encounters a repressed phenomenon in society as a whole. Interviews with caregivers and authorities, undertakers and estate administrators, neighbors and telephone counselors form the documentary basis for a walk-in audio installation. The metallic clacking of a letterbox slot, children's laughter from the courtyard, voices from the television and the crackling sound of a newspaper being turned over are combined with the interviews and music to create an atmospheric headphone concert that each viewer can follow on their own.

Vom einsamen Sterben tells of the fears of loneliness, aims to give older people a voice and portrays the powerlessness of the authorities and care workers. Last but not least, the production asks what society can do.
