Vortrag // Ruud Breteler, Rotterdam: Wer braucht wen, wann und warum? Zum Verhältnis von Erhard Göpel zu Max Beckmann

In the organizer's words:

The relationship between Max Beckmann (1884-1950) and the art historian Erhard Göpel (1906-1966) was characterized by a mutual but unequal dependence. During Beckmann's enforced stay in Amsterdam during the Second World War, Göpel's primary role was to protect the artist. When Göpel struggled to re-enter society after the war, Beckmann's death gave him the opportunity to present himself as the expert who could draw on his own contacts with the artist like no other. So did Erhard Göpel just skillfully exploit the relationship or did he possibly abuse the artist? Ruud Breteler explores this question in his lecture.

RuudBreteler (born 1957) studied at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands (BA Dutch Linguistics and Literature; MA Theater Studies). He began his professional career as head of marketing, public relations and education at the Twentse Schouwburg in Enschede (1985-1990). In the years between 1990 and 1998 he founded and managed an artistic 'greenhouse' connected to the Rotterdam Theater Schouwburg. There he produced and co-produced local, national and international theater projects. As General Director of the Theater am Zuidplein in Rotterdam, he redesigned the theater and its program to give it a new artistic profile with a focus on non-Western performing arts and audience participation (1998-2006). Between 2006 and 2020 he was project manager of the Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Rotterdam. He is currently preparing a dissertation in the form of a biography on Erhard Göpel under the supervision of Professor Emeritus Rudi Ekkart and Professor Gregor Langfeld.
