Wacken Open Air 2026

Wacken Open Air is this huge metal festival in a small village in Schleswig-Holstein, where for a few days it feels like everything is just stages, tents, mud (and sometimes dust), beer stands and frocks.

You arrive, stand in a queue somewhere, are directed to some camping area and quickly realize: this is less "we're camping nicely" and more "we're building a small town here for a moment". There's a pavilion with flags next to you, someone is shouting "WACKEN!" somewhere, and music is still playing on some campsite at night, no matter how late it is.

On the infield you have several big stages with correspondingly big productions: lots of fire, big screens, a lot of pressure on the sound. During the day it's often relaxed, people walk from band to band, get something to eat, sometimes just sit on the grass or in the mud and wait for the next act. In the evening, it gets fuller, especially with the headliners, and then the crowd pushes its way to the front.

What makes Wacken very typical is that it is extremely international. You hear different languages everywhere, and yet everyone agrees on one thing: when a band bangs, people join in. And even if you don't know anyone, you can quickly strike up a conversation - if necessary about whether your shoes will survive the weekend.

In terms of content, it's clearly metal-heavy, but not just one corner: from classic heavy/power to thrash and death to more modern stuff - depending on how the line-up is constructed that year. You can easily walk around all day and still feel like you've only seen half of it.

And yes: Wacken has this reputation with the mud for a reason. When it rains, it gets serious. Then you see rubber boots, improvised tarpaulin paths and people pulling each other out of places. When it's dry, it's dusty and windy. Both are part of it somehow.
