To mark his 90th birthday, C/O Berlin, in collaboration with the F.C. Gundlach Foundation, is presenting the first major retrospective of Walter Schels’ work in Berlin. Featuring more than 300 works spanning nearly seven decades, the exhibition offers new insights into his oeuvre and focuses on a previously little-seen aspect of his work: his experimental and transformative pieces. Schels became known for his haunting black-and-white portraits. Newborns and centenarians, famous and unknown faces, animals and plants—his gaze always revolves around fundamental questions of human existence. Central motifs and working methods are already evident in Schels’s earliest series, created in the 1960s in New York. In light of his experimental work, it now becomes clear how much change, repetition, and materiality define his photographic practice.
In celebration of Walter Schels’s ninetieth birthday, C/O Berlin and the F.C. Gundlach Foundation present the photographer’s first retrospective in Berlin. With more than three hundred works spanning nearly seven decades, the exhibition offers new insights into his work and focuses on an overlooked part of his career: the experimental and transformative works. Schels became known for his striking black-and-white portraits of newborns and centenarians, famous and unknown faces, animals, and plants. His gaze always revolves around fundamental issues of human existence. The photographer’s key subjects and working methods are already evident in his first series, created in the 1960s in New York. The focus on his experimental work now reveals the extent to which change, repetition, and materiality influenced his photographic practice.
