Ivan could have been an artist. But he has been managing a country estate for years. One day, his brother-in-law Alexander, a once-successful film director whom he supports financially, takes up residence there. Meanwhile, Ivan's niece Sonia is deeply in love with the country doctor, but he only has eyes for Helena - Alexander's second wife. In their self-pity, they all believe they are alone. But they are more alike than they think. Then a shot is fired.
Unfulfilled hopes and dreams, unrequited love - "Vanya" shows how unhappy life can be... and how heartbreakingly funny. The play lovingly reveals how ridiculous we sometimes are, and yet it makes us suffer, hope and cry along with it.
Simon Stephens has gently modernized "Uncle Vanya" and turned it into a monologue in which a single actor plays all eight roles. This shows even more impressively how lonely all the characters in Chekhov's universe are and yet how much they have in common. Our production will feature actor Jirka Zett, who will demonstrate how a whole world can be created out of nothing in the theater thanks to the audience's imagination.
