WEGE ZU BACH III

In the organizer's words:

Program:
Dieterich Buxtehude: Cantata "Ihr lieben Christen, freut euch nun" BuxWV 51
as well as works by Matthias Weckmann, Franz Tunder and Nicolaus Bruhns

Part III of the studio "Paths to Bach" opens new doors to the Baroque grand master's sources of inspiration. One name always crops up: Dieterich Buxtehude. Bach made a pilgrimage from Arnstadt to Lübeck to see him in 1705, because it was here that the "Abendmusiken", probably the oldest public concert series in the world, took place. Buxtehude had developed the tradition established by his predecessor Franz Tunder in St. Mary's Church into magnificent sacred concert events. His cantata "Ihr lieben Christen, freut euch nun", which the young Bach may have heard, is a testimony to this. Bach in turn made copies of works by Nicolaus Bruhns, a pupil of Buxtehude who died young in 1697, and contributed to their dissemination after his return to central Germany. Lionel Meunier is very familiar with the music of this period. He received a Gramophone Award in 2019 for his recording of a selection of Buxtehude's "Abendmusiken" with his ensemble Vox Luminis. Using the magnificent Schnitger organ and the galleries, he is now bringing the legendary "Abendmusiken" back to life with young musicians from all over the world!
