The USA in the 1970s: Paul Hunham works as a history professor at Deerfield Academy in New England, a private high school. He is not particularly popular with his students due to his pomposity and rigidity, and is single. So he spends the Christmas vacations on campus to look after students who have been unable to travel home to their families. After a few days, only one student remains, 15-year-old Angus. Head cook Mary, whose son is missing in Vietnam, joins the two. Over the two snowy weeks that follow, they form an unusual trio and have comical misadventures.
