At Christmas time, festively lit churches entice even infrequent churchgoers to enter the lofty spaces - especially when music emanates from inside the church. Familiar Christmas carols, passed down from generation to generation, unfold a very special magic. And so, at this year's Christmas concert, the NDR Vokalensemble combines well-known carols such as "Macht hoch die Tür, die Tor macht weit" with artistic praise, including Felix Mendelssohn's psalm setting "Jauchzet dem Herrn, alle Welt" and Johannes Brahms' motet "O Heiland, reiß die Himmel auf".

Devotion and dance rhythms
While the first part of the concert is dedicated to Advent hymns from German-speaking countries, chief conductor Klaas Stok has selected festive music from Great Britain for the second part. The Christmas carol "Tomorrow shall be my dancing day" seems to call for a boisterous dance across the pews. Its rousingly cheerful rhythms date back to the 16th century. German ears will certainly be familiar with "Ding dong, merrily on high", another British dance tune from the 16th century. Benjamin Britten's Christmas Carol "A hymn to the Virgin", on the other hand, is time-honored and devout. After all, the verses he set to music date back to the Middle Ages.
