Special Exhibition at Oldenburg Castle
The special exhibition “Changing Worldviews: Landscapes from Arcadia to the Anthropocene” at Oldenburg Castle features landscape depictions from the past five centuries. Paintings and drawings by J. H. W. Tischbein, Erich Heckel, and Gerhard Richter are juxtaposed with contemporary video art and installations.
Throughout history, people have sought to capture their environment artistically. A dynamic interplay has emerged over time: on the one hand, the ways in which landscapes are depicted reflect the prevailing worldview; on the other hand, the aesthetic experience of works of art influences our perception of the real world. In modern Europe, painting in particular conveys diverse notions of the benefits, wisdom, or even dangers that may be hidden in nature.
The exhibition aims to explore some of the central intellectual attitudes that have emerged over the centuries and illustrate them through selected works. To this end, historical exhibits from the collection of the Landesmuseum Kunst & Kultur Oldenburg are shown alongside contemporary works by internationally active artists. Themes such as mythology, ecology, and agriculture open up multifaceted perspectives on a genre rich in tradition, whose potential is often underestimated—not only from a historical standpoint.
Featuring works by Hans am Ende, Viktor Brim, Dorota Gawęda/Eglė Kulbokaitė, Erich Heckel, Philips Augustyn Immenraet, Eline Kersten, Till Langschied, Max Liebermann, Theodor Presuhn the Elder, Franz Radziwill, Gerhard Richter, Martel Schwichtenberg, Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, Ernst Willers, and others.
