Weltmacht Liebe. Eine Reise durch die Jahrhunderte
In the organizer's words:
The new special exhibition in the Ceremonial Hall of the Austrian National Library
Love is omnipresent: It shapes the thoughts, feelings, and actions of people throughout all eras and across all cultures. As self-love, it is self-centered; as spiritual love for God, it seems detached from the world. Love also means devotion to others, whether to romantic partners or to one’s neighbors.
No other emotion has left a deeper mark on the history of art and culture. The exhibition “Love as a World Power: A Journey Through the Centuries” in the Prunksaal traces this emotion through the collections of the Austrian National Library and unfolds a panorama of love: from the unattainable ideal of love to forbidden love, from the madness of love to love that transcends death.
Through a diverse array of objects, love is also revealed as a source of artistic inspiration. This is evident, for example, in ancient creation myths or medieval minnesang, in the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert, or in the literature of Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Arthur Schnitzler, and Ingeborg Bachmann. Famous love stories, love letters, and love songs spanning 2,000 years illustrate the continuity and adaptability of human emotions, as well as the many facets of love—a universal force—even beyond conventions and traditional gender roles.
