Herb excursion in Hamburg
Three-hour introduction to the urban world of wild plants
Hamburg is one of the greenest metropolitan areas in Germany. Large parks, riverside areas, forests and green urban spaces create diverse habitats in which numerous wild plants thrive. This herb walk shows how rich the plant life is even within a large city and where edible and usable species can be found.
The three-hour herb tour is aimed at people who want to learn the basics of collecting wild herbs. Accompanied by expert course leaders with a scientific background, at least twenty common wild plants are introduced. The focus is on identifying characteristics, possible uses and ecological relationships.
A central aspect of the tour is the factual classification of traditional plant knowledge. Traditional uses are critically examined and, where possible, supplemented with current findings from botany and nutritional science. In addition to culinary uses, risks are also discussed, such as confusion with problematic species or the legal and practical limits of collecting in urban areas.
Further content includes the origin of plant names, cultural-historical references and basic rules for a responsible and nature-friendly approach. The aim is to convey a solid basic understanding that can also be used independently after the tour.
The herb walks start at easily accessible meeting points in the Hamburg city area and last around three hours. Dates and locations vary and can be selected in the booking process. Upon completion, participants will receive supplementary materials by email, including plant portraits and references to further reading.
