WNBL invites ALLYSHA JOY

WNBL, until recently known as Wanubalé, is a collective of young music makers from Berlin and Potsdam who combine influences from electronic music, jazz and hiphop to create their own mix. Now they have a residency at Gretchen with WNBL invites. As part of their ever-evolving approach to music, they regularly invite artists* to create musical experiential spaces.

Melbourne-based singer, keyboardist, songwriter and producer Allysha Joy is a staple of the local soul-jazz scene and lead singer of the 30/70 Collective. Live, she is an incredibly powerful performer. Her touching, raspy voice harmonizes perfectly with her Fender Rhodes playing as she makes forays into jazz, soul, hip-hop and R&B.

Allysha has since made a name for herself in Europe as well and has performed on stage with artists* such as Sampa the Great, Matthew Halsall, Ezra Collective, Bradley Zero and Children of Zeus. She also has a platform on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide FM Radio.

Her 2018 debut album "Acadie : Raw" on Gondwana Records was named "Best Soul Album" at the Music Victoria Awards, collected a nomination for "Best Jazz Album" at the Worldwide Awards, and appeared on numerous annual best-of lists. In addition to a series of collaborations, in 2020 she released the EP "Light It Again," on which she was accompanied by an all-star cast from Melbourne, including Horatio Luna, Ziggy Zeitgeist, Danika Smith and Josh Kelly.

In 2022, she made her debut as a producer with her second album "Torn : Tonic", released on First Word. Here, Allysha Joy effortlessly spans a sonic palette of fractured grooves and heavenly melodies. Bouncy neo-soul mixes with swinging electronic percussion, Detroit synths and broken beat.

WNBL themselves come back with a punchy horn section and a rhythm section consisting of two drummers. All involved are musically socialized with Berlin club culture, all listening to dub, bass music and broken beats. Possibly that's why they never let their jazz skills hang out. Instead, they take jazz at its word and play impressive live sets with clever beats, improvisations and wonderful arrangements. Joining them is Mike Nasa, singer and rapper originally from California, who brings an incredible flow. Together with WNBL, this makes for an incredible journey of words and beats. From Anele, born and raised in South Africa and living in Berlin, there's a DJ set. Anele is heavily influenced by 90's music, spanning Kwaito, Neo Soul, R&B, Hip-Hop, Funk and House.
