For the government in Washington, the matter is clear: the People's Republic of China is threatening the global dominance of the USA with its economic rise. Hence the blatant announcement: any means are right to prevent this. The rest of the "Western community of values", including Germany, is following suit with varying degrees of enthusiasm. However, the central argument is not economic success, but the internal constitution of the country: This is characterized by exploitation, discrimination against ethnic minorities and a lack of democracy. In addition, too little is being done to combat climate collapse. Reliable information is hard to find.

Michael Brie knows the People's Republic of China from many long visits; he finished his last one a few weeks ago. At the same time, his political experience and scientific training enable him to distinguish well between ideology and truth. He was Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung and a Fellow of its Institute until 2023. In conversation with journalist and author Claus-Jürgen Göpfert, he will talk about his view of China and Western policy towards the country. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to join in the discussion and ask questions.
